Overview

Progress in cardiovascular medicine is moving at a fast pace. There are new drugs, new procedures and new imaging techniques that enable us to treat patients as never before. Cardiology in the last 20 years has grown into a complex field encompassing multiple sub-specialties and branching into allied specialties such as Neurology, Endocrinology, Genetics and Oncology. As such, the specialty is both difficult to master and yet present in the daily practice of Cardiologists, Internists, Family Practitioners and allied specialists. As the clinical leader in the South Florida area, Memorial Healthcare System’s Cardiac & Vascular Institute has the ability to share with practitioners on a regional level the advancements in the field that are an active part of our high volume clinical institution. The Cardiovascular Symposium will provide a wide but intimate view of “State of Cardiology“ with emphasis in practical aspects of diagnosis and therapy. Attendees will receive actionable information which will lead to better practices and improvement in both the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease in our community.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Differentiate what chronic coronary disease (CCD) is (as opposed to acute coronary syndromes) and understand when and how to evaluate the patient with CCD.
  2. Describe which medical, percutaneous coronary interventional, and surgical treatments improve quality of life in patients with CCD and those treatments that prevent myocardial infarctions and prolong life in the patient with CCD.
  3. Distinguish between oral antiplatelet therapy and oral anticoagulant therapy and understand why dual antiplatelet therapy is prescribed after coronary interventions and the appropriate length of time for a patient to take dual antiplatelet therapy vs single antiplatelet therapy.
  4. Identify GLP-1 agonists and SGLT-2 inhibitors currently being used in the treatment of diabetes, obesity, and cardiovascular disease, and how these agents decrease morbidity and mortality in cardiovascular disease.
  5. Determine when a patient with mitral regurgitation should be treated medically versus having an intervention with percutaneous mitral valve repair versus surgical mitral valve repair/replacement.
